Movie Night: 13 Assassins

For a bit of non-training entertainment and exposure to Japanese culture, the club is organizing a group viewing of the new samurai drama 13 Assassins at the Music Box Theater on May 27.
13 Assassins or Jûsan-nin no shikaku (十三人の刺客) is a remake of a classic 1963 film of the same title, a well-respected if not well known example of the chambara (sword-fighting) subgenre of jidai-geki (period film).

The film is directed by Takashi Miike, who is best known for his disturbing/violent psychological dramas (Audition, Ichi the Killer) although he has also dabbled in children’s fantasy films (Zebraman, The Great Yokai War).

13 Assassins is apparently a change of pace for Miike, his loving tribute to the works of great directors such as Akira Kurosawa and movies like The Seven Samurai. The film debuted in 2010 in Japan and at the Cannes Film Festival to great critical acclaim.
