Legend has it that rabbits make rice cakes (mochi) on the moon. They pound the rice (tsuki) in mortars with mallets.
The Midwest Buddhist Temple welcomes the public to participate in its annual Mochi-Tsuki (Rice Cake-Making Festival).
Rice cakes are integral part of the Japanese New Year’s celebrations. Come join the members of the Midwest Buddhist Temple in making mochi rice cakes the old-fashioned way: swinging large wooden kine (pestle) to pound steamed rice in a stone usu (mortar). No sign-up needed and it’s free. Fresh mochi will be available for purchase.
Everyone is welcome to come
